A Hub of Creativity and Inclusivity

In the heart of Bangor, Wales, a transformation is underway. What was once St Mary’s church is now Nyth, a vibrant hub for the arts, spearheaded by the visionary minds of Frân Wen and brought to life by the innovative design of Manalo & White Architects.

    Empowering Youth through the Arts

Frân Wen has long been dedicated to empowering young people from low-income backgrounds through the arts. Their mission to create Welsh-language theatre that is relevant, exciting, and contemporary led them to seek a new home, one that would reflect their ambition and provide a space for young talents to thrive.

    A Visionary Design

Manalo & White Architects won an international competition for the conversion of St Mary’s church into Nyth, based on their innovative approach and commitment to preserving the building's heritage while maximizing its potential. The result is a state-of-the-art arts hub that seamlessly blends historic architecture with modern functionality.

    Preserving Heritage, Embracing Innovation

Respecting the Grade II-listed Victorian building, Manalo & White embarked on a journey of conservation and renewal. They opened up the space to the surrounding landscape, fostering a positive ecosystem with local flora, and repurposed materials from the site itself, embodying the spirit of renewal and sustainability.

    A Space for Creativity

Nyth offers three main artistic spaces, equipped with cutting-edge technical facilities to support performances, workshops, and community events. From sound and lighting equipment to dedicated offices for Frân Wen’s admin team, every aspect of the design is tailored to nurture creativity and collaboration.

    Inclusivity at Its Core

Central to the project was ensuring accessibility for all. Manalo & White overcame the challenge of updating the Victorian architecture to provide step-free access, eliminating barriers and fostering inclusivity. The creation of a new, level entrance not only improves accessibility but also challenges stigmas associated with disability.

A Nest for Creativity to Soar

Nyth for Frân Wen is more than just a building; it's a symbol of hope, opportunity, and the transformative power of the arts. As young talents flock to this new creative nest, guided by the vision of Frân Wen and the expertise of Manalo & White, the future of Welsh-language theatre shines brighter than ever before.
