In 2007, we were invited along with 5 other architects to take part in a competition for the project Thermalbad & spa with a hotel in Zürich. In coorporation with Althammer Hochuli Architects, this competition resulted in the commission to plan this unique industrial heritage on the premises of the Hürlimann Areal.

The structurally dictated yet vibrant spectrum of the internal orientated space, deep within the mountain and the opening to the exterior and outside-world to the rooftop-pool was one of the key themes to the development of the interior architectural dramatury of this bath-complex. These atmospheric contrasts have been concentrated into the spatial concept and related to the existing, listed substance of the structure. Architectural and interior architectural design-notions such as spatial layout, processes, sightlines, installations, materials and surfaces proved to be congruent from the start and are working in a close relationship.

Nordic Spa by Line Design Studio

The building of the Nordic Spa complex is located 50 meters from the Baltic Sea, the coast of which is famous for sand dunes and a constantly changing landscape due to strong northerly winds.
The main concept of the Nordic Spa project is seclusion and contemplation of nature.
When designing the interior spaces of the complex, emphasis was placed on natural building materials. Siberian larch covered with water-based varnish is the main finishing material with high performance characteristics and natural texture.
The dominants of the complex are the interiors of two steam rooms and a rest room, from the windows of which you can see the beautiful Baltic nature.
Also, the spa complex includes premises: a reception area, changing rooms and a patio with outdoor showers.
The most pleasant time to visit Nordic Spa is autumn, winter. It is during this period of the year, when the sky takes on its heaviness, and the waves of the cold Baltic Sea become even more severe, it becomes especially pleasant to watch the riot of elements from warm steam rooms.

Villa Sirena nel promontorio di Plemmirio a Siracusa è un progetto esempio di bellezza e coerenza con il contesto nel rispetto dell'ambiente circostante. Frutto del lavoro di squadra tra lo studio dell’architetto Mario Rizza e la professionalità dell’impresa Teamnetwork di Siracusa, Villa Sirena ha l’obiettivo di attrarre turismo e mettere in risalto il fascino del paesaggio della riserva marina protetta del Plemmirio in cui è situata cercando di dare maggiore rilievo alle luci e le atmosfere delle diverse fasi stagionali.

Si tratta in realtà di una casa edificata negli anni settanta su di un terreno con pendii ripidi e terreno roccioso trasformata in un resort del benessere. La struttura, composta da due volumi che si fondono tra loro, sembra emergere dal terreno ben adattandosi alla topografia del luogo. Il volume dei due blocchi si allieneano e si incastrano tra di loro generando un sistema di vele nel quale si inseriscono tutte le finestre del progetto. Questo sistema produce un gioco di luce e ombre che danno profondità alla facciata, mettendo in risalto l'esterno con una serie di elementi compatti che emergono fuori da una roccia, e l'interno con la geometria dei fori e dei terrazzi. La parte predominante della casa quindi è un gioco di rapporto esterni-interni di colori e materiali a contrasto ma che trasmettono la percezione di un unico spazio all’occhio di chi la osserva.

La costruzione è di un bianco candido a contrasto con la roccia, il tetto è sormontato da pannelli fotovoltaici integrati estetici neri opachi senza effetti specchianti che rendono l’oggetto unico. Le line sono semplici, pulite e coerenti con la natura esterna. La casa p gircondata da un giardino di capperi, palme nane tra le rocce, oleandri fioriti e ulivi selvatici, insieme ad un giardino d’acqua che regala un effetto a specchio che si lega perfettamente con quello del mare dove un lunghissimo sfioratoio d’acqua ne elimina il bordo.

Le luci nascoste sui controsoffitti e le enormi vetrate ad alte prestazioni termiche ed acustiche, consentono alle 4 camere di essere proiettate verso il panorama e nel totale comfort. Al piano di accesso si trovano gli spazi principali della casa: soggiorno, sala da pranzo, cucina, wc, due camere matrimoniali e bagni. I pavimenti sono in resina di un colore azzurro cielo che a seconda dell’inclinazione della luce diventa più bianco durante il giorno e più azzurro quando il sole sale o scende. L'architettura riveste tutti gli ambienti interni ben climatizzati e riscaldati da un camino a tre facce che domina ogni punto di vista della casa.

È una casa che ti accoglie e ti incanta nel guardare la merviglia del panorama e del mare che arriva sino ed oltre Capo Passero, punta estrema meridionale della Sicilia. Vivere villa Sirena significa coinvolgere tutti i sensi: la vista con i suoi panorami e colori, il tatto con i materiali naturali, l’olfatto con i suoi giardini autoctoni, l’udito con il vento, ed il gusto con il sale che proviene dal mare.
